To Whom it May Concern ,
I have applied for the Age Pension but my Application was declined . I am 65 year old turning 66 year old in November I am married my husband is still working and so am I he is full time and I am Casual working between 9 to maybe 15 hours a week . I do not understand how they work it out that I was not able to receive any Benefits at all
Warmest Regards Cheryl Matheson
Hi Cheryl
The rejection letters from Centrelink are terribly cold and invariably lacking in details. It’s really important to call Centrelink when you receive a rejection notification to find out why they have made this decision. Perhaps you can still make this call to get greater clarification. This will make is easier for you to know what to expect if you decide to apply again.
Good luck
Hello
I have 2 questions please.
I am 71 on age pension this year. I receive $783. How can I find out how the deeming calculates please? I know it’s
3.25o/o but I can’t work it out.
I have 110,000 in superannuation and approx 60,000 in shares. Thank you.
Q2. Re lodger. I know I can earn $152 working a fortnight.
I thought having a lodger could be like work for me but of the $125 lodger pays, Centrelink takes $88 as income ( fair enough) but is this $88 taken off per week or 50o/o taken off as part of income earned. Income was recorded on last tax return. Sorry but I couldn’t get a clear answer by phone to Centrelink. Thank you. Pat.
Hi Pat
Deeming is determined based on whether you are a couple or a single. We have a worked example for deeming on our website if you click the link below – the should provide you with the explanation you are after:

With regards to how Centrelink calculates income from lodgers in your home, they have some info towards the bottom of the page on the link below:
